Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for the death penalty, which is dormant on Israel's law books. The hostages have already been threatened with execution by Hamas and are at risk of being hurt or killed in the military offensive launched by Israel in response to the Oct 7 attack. "CONFUSED PRIORITIES"The only court-ordered execution in Israel was of convicted Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in 1962. The conservative Likud party of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has shown little interest in advancing it during its long rule. Linor Dan-Calderon, three of whose relatives are hostages, accused Ben-Gvir's party of having "confused priorities".

The Libreria Argentina establishment sold books with images of swastikas, iron crosses and the imperial eagle of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, commonly known as the Nazi party, as well as Nazi propaganda texts. Police arrested one person during the raids in the San Isidro district, located in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. After the war, many Nazi officials including death camp supervisor Adolf Eichmann also emigrated to Argentina to avoid trials for war crimes. Several anti-Semitic groups emerged in the following decades and in 1994 the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires was bombed, killing 85 people and wounding hundreds. Bret: And yet there are some crimes that are so premeditated, hateful and cruel that I think society has to respond in the severest way possible. The country can get past a president who breaks the law in his private life, hides official documents and hides the evidence that he hides official documents. Bret: I thought the right remedy for Jan. 6 was political, via immediate impeachment and conviction, as I wrote at the time. Gail: All this drama keeps bringing me back to Mike Pence — and believe me, I never thought I’d be in a world where I wanted to be back with Mike Pence in any way, shape or form. But when the critical moment came, he followed through and declared the actual election winner the actual election winner.

But he's a very unusual protester - a former Mossad spy who never before questioned the state for which he once risked his life on foreign missions. Amir, who declined to be fully named due to his sensitive previous secret roles, is among former veterans of Mossad, Israel's foreign intelligence service, who are taking to the streets in protest at their government's judiciary overhaul. Reuters spoke with two other former Mossad officials who are also involved in the protests and more fearful of the impact the legislation will have on Israel's security system. Yossi Cohen, another former Mossad chief, spoke of his concerns for "Israel's immediate national security". "At a time when the Iranian threat looms over us from multiple fronts, we must ensure Israel's security remains unharmed," Cohen wrote in a July 23 commentary in the Yedioth Ahronoth daily.
